*** The Ongoing Israeli Aggression on Lebanon Resulted in the Killing of 886, Injuring 2,141, and Displacement of More than One Million Lebanese People by March 16, 2026 ***
Israel strikes Beirut suburbs as displacement shelters overflow Célia LEBUR, AFP NBC, March 17, 2026 Israel carried out new strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and again ordered residents of vast parts of southern Lebanon to evacuate, as more than a million people have been displaced across the country. Early Tuesday morning Israeli aircraft bombed two neighborhoods of Beirut's southern suburbs, state media said, and also struck Doha Aramoun, south of the capital, wounding an Ethiopian woman. Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war on March 2 when pro-Iran Hezbollah launched rockets towards Israel in response to US-Israeli strikes that killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel has responded with intense strikes in multiple Lebanese regions and some ground operations in the south. Israel confirmed the Tuesday strikes, saying it was targeting Hezbollah, as it has since the start of the conflict, a day after announcing the start of "limited" ground operations in southern Lebanon. Israeli strikes have killed 886 people, including 67 women and 111 children, since March 2, Lebanon's health ministry said on Monday, adding that 2,141 others have been wounded. At the same time, the Israeli military renewed its call for residents to evacuate a region stretching more than 40 kilometers from the Lebanon-Israel border. Around 14 percent of Lebanese territory is under Israeli evacuation warnings, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council. Lebanese authorities said more than one million people had registered as displaced since March 2 -- more than a sixth of the country's population -- with more than 130,000 people staying in upwards of 600 official shelters. These displaced people "will not return to their homes" in the south as long as the security of residents in northern Israel is not guaranteed, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said this week. - Overcrowded centers - In the southern city of Sidon, far from the border, displaced people were sleeping in their cars parked along the seafront corniche, according to an AFP team on the ground. "Saida is full, we have no more capacity", said Jihan Kaisi, the director of an NGO that runs a school-turned-shelter, where more than 1,100 people are crammed together. "Lots of people are coming every day to ask for shelter but we don't have space anymore, we can't accept them," she added. She said that the road from the south was blocked on Monday with people fleeing north following evacuation orders. A strike on Tuesday morning targeted a building in a village in the Sidon region, after a warning from the Israeli military, according to state media. Another strike in the Nabatiyeh region wounded five Lebanese army soldiers travelling in a car and on a motorcycle, one of them seriously, according to an army statement. Alongside its massive bombardment campaign, Israel has announced that it is carrying out ground incursions in the south with troops and armored vehicles. On Tuesday the Israeli military said "additional... troops have been deployed in Lebanon, continuing efforts to establish a forward defense posture in order to remove threats and create an additional layer of security for residents of northern Israel against Hezbollah's threat". Israel's military chief of staff Eyal Zamir said on Monday that "more than 400 terrorists have been eliminated so far". Hezbollah said the same day that it had launched rockets and drones towards the city of Nahariya in northern Israel, where a man was wounded by an explosion, according to Israeli rescuers. The group also claimed responsibility early on Tuesday for two rocket attacks on groups of Israeli soldiers near the villages of Maroun El-Ras and Maiss El-Jabal, located on the border. On Monday evening, the leaders of Germany, Canada, France, Italy and the United Kingdom warned that a large-scale Israeli ground operation in Lebanon "would have devastating humanitarian consequences and could lead to a protracted conflict". *** ýMartyrs and wounded following the occupation raids on Lebanon and Hezbollah continues to bombard settlementsý ýRefugees.Net, Saturday, March 14, 2026ý ýThe Israeli occupation's aggression on Lebanon continues for the thirteenth day in a row, amid intensive air raids that left widespread destruction and the loss of martyrs and wounded, including civilians and medical staff, while the Lebanese resistance continues to respond by targeting military sites and settlements in northern occupied Palestine, and confronting incursion attempts in southern Lebanon.ý ýOn the morning of Saturday, 14 March, the Israeli warplanes launched two raids on areas in Lebanon. The first strike targeted a residential apartment in the Haret Saida area of the country, which led to its complete destruction, killing four citizens and wounding several others, according to the Lebanese National News Agency.ý ýThe second raid targeted the Al-Nabaa area in the Matn district of Mount Lebanon, where a violent explosion resounded inside an apartment in the same building that was bombed by the occupation on Friday.ý ýEarlier, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced the martyrdom of 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses as a result of a raid by the occupation that targeted the primary health care center in the town of Borj Qalawiya in the Bint Jbeil district in southern Lebanon, noting that the toll is preliminary as the search for missing persons under the rubble continues.ý ýThe ministry also announced that seven people were killed and others were wounded in the occupation raid that targeted the neighborhood of the nuns in the city of Nabatieh.ý ýIn the same context, local reports reported additional raids on the Madi neighborhood in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut, and on the eastern town of Zuter in the south of the country.ý ýAccording to field data, the number of martyrs since dawn on Saturday has risen to 23 Lebanese, including 12 medical personnel, as a result of sporadic raids on several areas in the country.ý ýOn the other hand, Hezbollah announced the implementation of a series of operations in response to the occupation's raids.ý ýThe party confirmed in a press statement that its fighters targeted the settlements of "Kiryat Shmona" and "Metla" at dawn today, for the second time, with rocket barrages, and also targeted a gathering of occupation soldiers at the Aqaba hill in the border town of Maroun al-Ras.ý ýThe resistance stated in successive statements that it also targeted gatherings of the occupation forces in several border locations, including the reservoir hill in the town of Adissa, the Hamusiya area west of the town of Bleda, in addition to the "Ein Zeitim" base north of Safed, and the vicinity of the Khiam detention center.ý ýIt also announced that an armored vehicle of the occupation army was targeted near the detainee with a guided missile, which led to its direct injury.ý ýIn the course of the operations, the resistance fired rockets at a new site in Nimr al-Jamal, opposite the town of Alma al-Shaab, and also targeted a gathering of occupation soldiers at the site of Balat al-Mustadhad.ý ýOn Friday evening, the resistance announced the targeting of the "Ein Shemer" base east of Hadera, a missile air defense base, with a swarm of prickly drones, in addition to targeting the "Stella Maris" naval monitoring and control base with drones.ý ýOn the ground, media reports reported that Israeli artillery shelling targeted the towns of Aitaroun and Einatha in southern Lebanon, while the sounds of machine gun bursts were heard in the area, with a number of vehicles retreating towards the south of the town of Khiam after being targeted by the resistance.ý ýThe Hebrew media acknowledged that there was significant damage in the settlement of "Metla" as a result of the recent rocket barrage launched by Hezbollah.ý ýIn the political context, Hizbullah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem said in a speech on the occasion of International Quds Day on Friday evening that the party is fighting a legitimate battle to defend Lebanon in the face of "Israeli" aggression.ý ýIn his speech, Qassem stressed that the party has learned lessons from previous confrontations and prepared itself for a long battle, noting that "the enemy will be surprised on the ground."ý ýHe added that the current battle is a legitimate defense battle for Lebanon in the face of what he described as the American-Israeli aggression, stressing that it is "not for anyone, but for the defense of Lebanon."ý ýFor its part, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the implementation of the 48th wave of Operation "Waad Sadiq 4" in cooperation with Hezbollah, noting that the attacks targeted Israeli positions in the Galilee, the occupied Syrian Golan, the city of Haifa, in addition to bases of US forces in the area.ý ýThe attacks also included sites in Haifa, Caesarea, the settlements of Zarait and Shlomi, as well as the military-industrial complex in Holon, he said, noting that US bases in al-Dhafra base and Iraqi Kurdistan were targeted with missiles and drones.ý ýAccording to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the continuous Israeli aggression on Lebanon until Friday evening resulted in the death of more than 773 people, including 103 children, and the injury of 1933 others, including 326 children.ý ýOn March 2, Israel expanded the scope of its aggression against Lebanon, coinciding with a broader military escalation in the region, after the start of joint attacks with the United States on Iran on February 28.ý ýIn an unprecedented escalation of aggression against Iran, Washington launched intensive air strikes targeting Iran's Kharg Island, one of the country's most important oil export centers, while Tehran vowed to respond with continuous waves of missile and drone attacks on the Israeli entity and US bases in the region, which foreshadows the expansion of the confrontation in the Middle East.ý ýUS forces carried out one of the "most powerful airstrikes in the history of the Middle East", according to US President Donald Trump, targeting military sites on Kharg Island, a major hub for Iranian oil exports.ý ý"The strikes have completely destroyed every military target in Iran's crown jewel," Trump said, adding that he had decided not to target the island's oil infrastructure.ý ýTrump said that decision could change if Iran or anyone else disrupts freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the United States will immediately reconsider targeting oil infrastructure if vessel traffic in the strait is threatened.ý ýIran's Fars news agency reported that the US attack did not damage oil infrastructure on Kharg Island, despite more than 15 explosions being heard during the bombardment.ý ýThe strikes targeted air defence systems, a naval base and a control tower at the island's airport, it said, noting that thick plumes of smoke rose after the attack.ý ýThe agency also quoted an Iranian source as saying that Trump's claims about the destruction of defenses on the island are "not true."ý ýThe US escalation coincided with the continuation of the military confrontation between Iran and Israel, as the occupation forces announced that they had carried out more than 7,600 raids since the start of the war on February 28, while the Iranian army said that it had shot down 111 drones since the outbreak of the confrontation.ý ýThe occupation army also announced, on Friday evening, the killing of a number of members of the "Basij" unit while they were targeting them while they were working at checkpoints newly erected in the Iranian capital, Tehran.ý ýOn the same day, he said, he struck more than 150 targets in western and central Iran, including ballistic missile storage sites and additional launch pads, as well as drone storage facilities, air defence systems and facilities used in the production of weapons.ý ýOn the other hand, the IRGC continued to carry out attacks as part of Operation True Promise 4, announcing the launch of its 48th wave of operations, which targeted areas in the Galilee, the Golan and Haifa, in addition to US bases in the region using drones and Qadr and Khyber Shaken missiles.ý ýIran also fired two rocket batches at dawn on Saturday towards Israel, which led to sirens sounding in the towns south of Haifa, Nazareth, Wadi Ara, Marj Ibn Amer, the Jordan Valley and the occupied West Bank.ý ýThe Magen David Adom reported that no injuries were recorded from the two attacks so far.ý ýThe Wall Street Journal reported that five U.S. Air Force refueling planes were damaged by an Iranian strike on Prince Sultan's base in Saudi Arabia.ý ýTwo Iraqi officials also reported that a missile hit a helipad inside the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, while Associated Press footage showed a plume of smoke rising from inside the embassy compound.ý ýAn Iraqi security source confirmed that the attack was carried out by a drone that targeted the diplomatic mission.ý ýIran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its navy had carried out two attacks in an earlier wave of the same operation, targeting al-Dhafra air base, which houses US forces south of Abu Dhabi.ý ýThe missile strikes hit early warning radars, command and control centers and US troop concentration sites inside the base using cruise and ballistic missiles, he said.ý death toll rises as renewed shelling resumes at dawn on Mondayý ýLebanese Health: In the past hours, about 30 martyrs and nearly 100 injuries have been recordedý ýThe Lebanese arena witnessed a military escalation at dawn on Monday, as the confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah entered a new phase, in light of the expansion of Israeli military operations and the increase in the number of casualties due to the continuous raids on the areas of southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.ý ýýIn details, Israeli warplanes launched three raids on the city of Khiyam in southern Lebanon at dawn today, while two additional raids targeted the town of Yater in the same area, as part of a series of continuous air attacks on the towns in the south.ý ýThe Israeli occupation army also announced the start of limited ground operations in southern Lebanon, led by the forces of the 91st Division, which it said targeted what it described as Hezbollah's military infrastructure.ý/p> ýThe army said in a statement that the operations were aimed at dismantling these structures and eliminating party elements as part of the ongoing operations.ý ýThe Israel Broadcasting Corporation quoted a military source as saying that the 91st Division has begun an operation aimed at expanding what Israel calls the "security zone" in southern Lebanon, in a move that could pave the way for the expansion of ground operations in the border area.ý ýIn the same context, Israel Radio reported that the army intends to ask for the government's approval to increase the number of reserve forces to about 450,000 soldiers, as part of preparations for the possibility of carrying out a large-scale ground operation inside Lebanese territory.ý ýIn parallel, the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut was subjected to Israeli raids, in addition to shelling on a number of southern cities and towns, including Bint Jbeil and Khayyam, which raises fears that the confrontation will expand into an open war on the Lebanese front.ý ýOn the humanitarian front, the Lebanese Ministry of Health, through the Public Health Emergency Operations Center, announced that the death toll from the Israeli raids from March 2 to March 15 reached 850 martyrs and 2,105 wounded.ý ýAccording to the daily report issued by the ministry, 24 martyrs and 96 wounded were recorded in the past hours alone as a result of the continuous Israeli raids.ý ýThe data showed that among the martyrs, 107 children were killed, while the number of injured children reached 331. The number of male martyrs reached 677 compared to 1415 wounded, while 66 female martyrs and 359 women were wounded.ý ýThis escalation on the Lebanese front comes in conjunction with the continuation of the military confrontation between Israel, the United States and Iran, which has entered its seventeenth day, in light of the exchange of rocket attacks and the expansion of military operations in more than one arena in the region.ý ÅÓÑÇÆíá ÊÈÏà ÚãáíÇÊ ÈÑíÉ ãÍÏæÏÉ Ýí áÈäÇä æÇÑÊÝÇÚ ÍÕíáÉ ÇáÔåÏÇÁ ãÚ ÊÌÏÏ ÇáÞÕÝ ÝÌÑ ÇáÅËäíä – åáÇ ÇÎÈÇÑ *** Israel steps up bombing in Lebanon as Iran keeps stranglehold on shipping PBS, Mar 16, 2026 BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — The war in the Middle East raged on multiple fronts on Monday, as the U.S. and Israel pummeled military targets in Iran's capital, Israel stepped up its campaign against Iran-backed militants in Lebanon and Iran retaliated with a drone strike that temporarily forced the closure of Dubai's airport, a crucial hub for travelers. Fears of a global energy crisis persisted, even as a small number of ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which a fifth of the world's oil is usually transported. Iranian strikes on commercial ships in and around the strait, and even just the threat of those attacks, have slowed shipping there to a trickle. That has dramatically increased the price of oil and put pressure on Washington to do something to ease the pain for consumers and the global economy. Brent crude, the international standard, remained over $100 a barrel on Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump said he has demanded that roughly a half-dozen countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, but so far his appeals have brought no commitments. Iranian Foreign Minister 'Abbas Araghchi said of the strait, "From our perspective it is open" — just not for the United States, Israel and its allies. On social media, Araghchi also rejected as "delusional" claims that Iran was looking for a negotiated end to the war. He said it was seeking neither "truce nor talks." Since the United States and Israel attacked Iran more than two weeks ago, Tehran has regularly fired drones and missiles at Israel, American bases in the region, and Gulf Arab countries' energy infrastructure. Israel hits Beirut and launches new attacks on Tehran Massive explosions were heard in Beirut as Israel launched new attacks on the Lebanese capital before dawn, saying it was striking infrastructure related to the Iran-linked Hezbollah militia group. Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel after the U.S.-Israeli attack of Iran on Feb. 28. The Israeli army has issued evacuation orders for many neighborhoods in Beirut as well as southern Lebanon. Israel's strikes have displaced more than 800,000 Lebanese from large swaths of the country's southern region and its capital's southern suburbs, and some 850 people have been killed in Lebanon. Some Israeli troops have pushed into southern Lebanon, and there are fears that Israel is preparing a large-scale invasion. In southern Lebanon, seven people were killed in Israeli airstrikes, according to authorities and news reports. Not long after Israel's military announced it had launched new strikes on Tehran, targeting infrastructure, explosions were heard in the Iranian capital and outlying areas. More details were not immediately available with information coming out of Iran severely limited by internet outages, round-the-clock airstrikes and tight restrictions on journalists. More than 1,300 people have been killed in Iran so far, according to the Iranian Red Crescent. Israel has carried out some 7,600 strikes on Iran so far, knocking out 85% of its air defenses and 70% of Iran's missile launchers, military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani told reporters Monday. In Israel, 12 people have been killed by Iranian missile fire. At least 13 U.S. military members have been killed.
