SOHR, 11/07/2018 5 minutes read

Daraa Province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: the Syrian Observatory monitored violent clashes since dawn of today Wednesday, the 11th of July, on areas in al-Yarmouk Basin in the western countryside of Daraa, between the rebel and Islamic factions against Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid which swore allegiance to the “Islamic State” Organization, in a violent attack carried out by the latter on Hayt town, accompanied by violent explosions caused by intense exchange of shelling, as well as detonating a booby trapped vehicle by Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid in the area, and confirmed information about casualties due to the continuous clashes and detonation, also Jaysh Khaled was able to advance inside Hayt town, also the Syrian Observatory monitored on Wednesday morning, the 11th of July 2018, that the Russian warplanes started carrying out raids on al-Yarmouk Basin, where this morning they have targeted Sahem al-Golan town (which is under the control of Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid which swore allegiance to the “Islamic State” organization) for the first time since they entered Syria, in support for the factions that are under violent attack by Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid in Hayt town, while 30000 civilians are still trapped in Yarmouk Basin area, and they are still prevented from getting out by Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid which swore allegiance to the Organization, where it is taking them as human shields.

The Syrian Observatory published last night that the area of Yarmouk Basin in the western sector of countryside, is witnessing a state of alertness, as a part of preparations for a wide-scale military operation by the regime forces and their allies in the area, where intersected sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that it will by against Jaysh Khaled Ibn Al-Waleed, which carried out a detonation today targeting a gathering of the regime forces in the brigade of Zayzun west of Daraa, and in the details obtained by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights; the regime forces have brought a column of tens of vehicles, armored vehicles and tanks, from Al-Sanamayn area in the northern countryside of Daraa, towards the western countryside of Daraa, as a part of mobilization by the regime forces to start a military operation against Jaysh Khaled Ibn Al-Waleed which swore allegiance to the “Islamic State” organization, the SOHR also monitored that the latter raised dirt barriers along the contact lines with the factions’ controlled areas and the contact areas with the regime forces and gunmen loyal to them, along with preventing more than 30,000 citizens by Jaysh Khaled from leaving the villages and towns of Yarmouk Basin in the western sector of Daraa countryside, where the intersected sources confirmed to the SOHR that the organization took those people who were prevented from leaving its areas, as human armors to prevent the regime forces to target its areas and to take a shelter in them, amid fears for the lives of the citizens remaining in the villages and towns which are under control of this army in the west of Daraa.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored anticipation for starting the military operation in the area which is suggested to be launched in any time, after large mobilizations by the regime forces in the area which is adjacent the areas of presence of Jaysh Khaled Ibn Al-Waleed which is in control of about 250 square km with a percentage of 6.6% of the area of Daraa province, and these mobilizations come in the wake of an attack for the first time by Jaysh Khaled against the regime forces after they became at the first point of contact between the both parties, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has monitored the death of a large number of members of the regime forces and gunmen loyal to them, in the first targeting to them by Jaysh Khaled Ibn Al-Waleed after the regime forces and the army which pledges allegiance to the “Islamic State” organization are met, and in the details obtained by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights; at least 14 members of the regime forces and gunmen loyal to them were killed as a result of detonating a booby trapped vehicle by Jaysh Khaled Ibn Al-Waleed, which targeted a gathering of the regime forces in the brigade of Zayzun over which the regime forces imposed their control in the past 36 hours, in the western countryside of Daraa, also others were injured with varying severity, where he number of casualties may increase because of the presence of injured cases in serious conditions.

And the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also published today morning, that it monitored the continuation of displacement of the civilians from their homes, villages, and towns in Yarmouk Basin in the western countryside of Daraa, local sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory that the resentment increases among the residents who wish to displace out of fear of a military operation in the area, which is controlled by Jaysh Ibn Khalid al-Walid which swore allegiance to the “Islamic State” Organization, and this resentment comes as a result of prevent civilians by Jaysh Ibn Khalid al-Walid from getting out of its controlled areas, where the Organization is now preventing people from getting out of its areas after the exit of more than 10000 persons -including thousands of children and women- towards the countryside of Al-Quneitra and the borders with the occupied Syrian Golan, and people are afraid of the start of a military operation by the regime forces or the Russians against Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid, after the regime forces reached the contact lines with Jaysh Ibn Khalid al-Walid in Yarmouk Basin, after the regime forces expanded on the border with Jordan, and the SOHR also published that the regime forces are continuing to expand in Daraa province in the Syrian South, combining, with each advancement, more areas to their scope of control inside the province, decreasing the factions’ scope of control, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored consensus with the representatives of 4 towns in the north-western countryside of Daraa, on the entry of the regime forces according to the agreement with the Russians which ended the military operations, thus, the regime forces expanded their control and advanced even more inside the province, increasing their scope of influence to about 80% of the area of Daraa province, which decreased the factions’ scope of control to about 13.3% of the area of the province, after agreeing on handing over heavy weapons and the return of the regime’s institutions, and the agreement is supposed to be activated in the next 24 hours, and the Syrian Observatory also published about 36 hours ago, that it monitored the regime forces continue to be deployed on the Syrian-Jordanian border today, Monday, the 9th of July 2018, where the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them advanced in the western countryside of Daraa, by imposing their control over the areas of Tal Shihab, Zayzoun, and Hayt, and they become in control of the entire areas of factions on the border with Jordan, also, for the first time since more than five years ago they become in contact with Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid; which swore allegiance to the “Islamic State” Organization, and the Syrian Observatory monitored the regime forces deploy in vehicles, armored vehicles, and military forces on the entire border, where this borderline from al-Suwaidaa Province until the areas that are controlled by Jaysh Khalid Ibn al-Walid; has become under the control of the regime forces, Including Nasib border crossing with Jordan.

Two Centcom-Based Service Members Die Over Weekend

July 9, 2018, WASHINGTON --

Members of the Defense Department express condolences for the two U.S. Central Command service members who died during the weekend, Army Col. Rob Manning, director of defense press operations, told reporters this morning.

The guided missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham transits the Strait of Gibraltar at dusk, June 14, 2018. The ship was conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe. While supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in the Tarin Kowt district of Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province, Army Cpl. Joseph Maciel of South Gate, California, died July 7 of wounds he suffered during an apparent insider attack, Manning said, noting the incident is under investigation.

Maciel was posthumously promoted to corporal. He had served in Afghanistan since February.

Two other U.S. service members were wounded during the attack and are in stable condition, Manning added.

Maciel was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Benning, Georgia. Task Force 1-28 Infantry is deployed in support of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, the colonel noted.

Sailor Dies During Small-boat Ops

On July 8, a sailor assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham died from injuries suffered while conducting small-boat operations in the Red Sea, Manning said.

The sailor, whose name will be released 24 hours after family members are notified, was medically evacuated to a hospital in Jordan and was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m. local time.

“The Navy is investigating the circumstances of the sailor's death,” the colonel said, adding that there was no indication of foul play and the sailor died in a nonhostile environment.

The Jason Dunham is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Centcom region, he added.

“These losses are a solemn reminder that our business is inherently dangerous -- but through training and pertinent planning, we always try to mitigate the risks to our personnel who are our most valuable asset,” Manning said.
