In the past 10 days, 109 civilians have been killed and dozens wounded in air raids by the Saudi-led Arab coalition in several provinces across Yemen, a UN official said on Thursday.

The United Nations is deeply disturbed by the high civilian casualties caused by the escalating and indiscriminate attacks,  said Jamie McGoldrick, UN humanitarian coordinator for the UN Office in Yemen.

On 26 December, air raids hit a crowded market in al Hayma area of Attazziah district in Taiz province, southwestern Yemen, killing at least 54 civilians, including eight children, and injuring 32 others, including six children, the statement said.

The residential areas of al Hayma villages, including a health facility sheltering IDPs, have been completely besieged by Houthis militants, and hit by indiscriminate shelling that has caused casualties among the population and many families fleeing to safer areas, according to the statement.

These incidents prove the complete disregard for human life that all parties, including the Saudi-led Coalition, continue to show in this absurd war that has only resulted in the destruction of the country and the incommensurate suffering of its people, who are being punished as part of a futile military campaign by both sides, McGoldrick said.

McGoldrick reminded all conflicted parties, including the Saudi-led coalition, of their obligations under international humanitarian law to spare civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to always distinguish between civilian and military targets.
