Hundreds of Iraqis Killed Daily, by US-Iraqi Government Air Strikes, Bombardment, 600,000 Civilian Refugees from Mosul

May 31, 2017

Editor's Note:

The coalition which fights the Islamic State and other Sunni groups in Syria consists of US-led NATO forces, Russian forces, Syrian Alewite government forces, Iranian-backed Shi'i militias, and Kurdish peshmerga forces. The coalition's continuous attacks have resulted in the killing of thousands of Iraqi and Syrian Sunni Muslim Arabs and the eviction of millions of them as a result of the destruction of their cities and villages.

The end outcome is going to be the weakening and possible dismantling of Iraqi and Syrian states as well as the eviction (ethnic cleansing of) Sunni Muslim Arabs, particularly from the upper Euphrates region of northwestern Iraq and northeastern Syria.

The larger context for understanding the Syrian war (and other wars in the Middle East) is that it contributes to the implementation of the Zionist-Israeli plan of destroying the Arab Middle Eastern states in preparation for the establishment of the greater Israeli empire, from the Nile of Egypt to the Euphrates of Iraq.

U.N. says 600.000 fled western Mosul, troops resume cautious advances

by Mohamed Mostafa May 30, 2017, 3:44 pm

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) --

Battles between Islamic State militants and Iraqi forces struggling to retake western Mosul have forced nearly 600.000 civilians to flee the region since February, according to a United Nations spokesperson who spoke on Tuesday.

Jens Laerka, spokesperson of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, was quoted by news reports saying in a press conference in Geneva that those fleeing were still encountering difficult conditions, adding that there were still major humanitarian concerns regarding the protection of 180.000 who are still besieged inside the Old City area and other districts to its north.

Laerke said humanitarian needs and the need or protect was still high, not only for migrating families, but also for citizens at regions that had recently been liberated.

The announced number represents a surge from nearly half a million which the U.N. said earlier this month had fled western Mosul.

Iraqi forces have been approaching IS’s last entrenchment in western Mosul in the Old City since earlier late April. Operations to recapture western Mosul launched on February 19th. Eastern Mosul was liberated in January.

On field, a security source told Shafaaq News website that IS snipers had killed three civilians who were trying to make it  to security-held areas in Zanjili district. The source said troops were advancing slowly and cautiously in the neighborhood.

At al-Shefa district, to the northwest, no ground advances were recorded, with air and artillery strikes continuing on residential areas of the neighborhood, while hospitals there remain under militants’ control.

Federal Police forces also repelled an attack by IS near Bab al-Toub, an area inside the Old City, killing five of the attackers.

Forty-five civilians killed, injured in airstrikes by US-led coalition in Mosul’s Old City

by Nehal Mostafa May 28, 2017, 5:21 pm

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) --

Forty-five civilians were killed and injured in airstrikes that hit Mosul’s Old City early on Sunday, news reports mentioned.

A local source told Al-Furat Al-Ikhbari news website that twenty civilians were killed, while more than 25 others were wounded in an airstrike launched by the international coalition led by the U.S. at al-Farouq street and Hadiret al-Sadah, north of the Old City.

The Old City is home of the ancient Grand Nuri Mosque, from which the group’s Supreme Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave a famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the ‘caliphate’

Previously in May, the Joint Operations Command said more than 16,000 IS fighters were killed since start of Mosul operations in October.

Iraqi commanders say they at least 90 percent of territories in western Mosul is under Iraqi troops control, predicting to retake the city before the end of May. Only two districts besides the Old City are under IS control.

Iraqi forces have been sweeping through northwestern neighborhoods over the past few weeks in a way to invade the strategic Old City, after finding it hard to invade from the south.

The eastern side of Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles. Another major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western flank of the city.

Iranian revolutionary guard commander killed in west Mosul operations

by Mohamed Mostafa May 27, 2017, 10:52 am3 Comments

Baaj (IraqiNews.com) --

A commander with the Iranian elite Revolutionary Guards Corps was killed in operations by Iran-backed, Iraqi paramilitary forces against the Islamic State, an agency reported late Friday.

Haj Shaban Nasiri was killed during operations by al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) in Baaj, a desert area near the borders with Syria still witnessing an Islamic State presence, according to online Iranian newspaper Mashregh News.

The website said Nasiri had co-founded Badr Organization which fought the Saddam Hussein regime in the 1980s. Badr Organization is part of the PMU force, an alliance of more than 60 mainly Shia paramilitary groups fighting the Islamic State since 2014.

The website pointed to what it described as Nasiri’s “effective presence” in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

Iran is an ardent political and military supporter of Shia governments and militias in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. IRGC fighters are actively engaged in fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assad’s forces against IS and rebel fighters in Syria.

PMUs enjoy Iraqi government recognition since November.  They launched an offensive earlier this month to recapture areas near the Syrian borders from Islamic State militants, running simultaneously with government forces battles to retake Mosul, Islamic State’s largest stronghold in Iraq.

On field, al-Hashd al-Shaabi media said Saturday its troops recaptured Rambous village north of Baaj region. It has been taking over villages in neighboring Qairawan over the past few weeks.

US-led coalition airstrike kills dozens of Islamic State members, west of Anbar

by Nehal Mostafa May 28, 2017, 1:46 pm

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Dozens of Islamic State members were killed in an airstrike launched by the U.S.-led coalition, west of Anbar, a military source in the province said.

“The coalition jets shelled the IS tunnels and weapon stashes in Houran valley, west of Rutba town,” the source told AlSumaria News.

“The strikes left the tunnels and stashes destroyed and dozens of IS militants killed,” the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

Rutba is controlled by security troops, however, the town faces IS militants attacks every now and then that are being encountered by security.

Last week, an offensive was launched in the desert of Anbar leaving 34 militants killed. According to the War Media Cell, the operation was launched through thee axes including north of Qadisiya lake toward Rawa city, south of Euphrates River toward Rihana and Annah cities and another axis toward Makhazin Haditha and Valley of Houran.

Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa have been held by the extremist group since 2014, when it emerged to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition have also regularly pounded IS locations in the province. The Iraqi government is expected to aim at those strongholds once the Mosul battle is concluded.

Two Suicide Bombing Attacks Kill 62 People in Baghdad

Mohamed Mostafa May 30, 2017, 9:40 am

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) --

Casualties from two suicide bombings that hit central Baghdad early Tuesday have stood at 62, according to a local official.

Sputnik agency quoted Mohamed al-Rubaiy, deputy chairman of the security committee at Baghdad council, saying that was the final toll from the explosions that hit Shohadaa Bridge and Karrada areas.

The Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing in Karrada which Rubaiy said killed 10 people and wounded 32 others late Monday.

The bombing was carried out by suicide bomber who drove a booby-trapped car into a crowded square of Karrada near an ice cream shop.

Rubaiy said the other bombing in Shohadaa, which occurred near a government agency, killed seven people and wounded eleven others.

Violence and armed conflicts claimed the lives of 317 Iraqis and caused injuries to 403 others during the month of April, according to a monthly United Nations count.

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Nineveh, where U.S.-backed Iraqi government troops are caught up in battles against Islamic State militants in Mosul since October, was the most affected governorate, with 276 casualties (153 killed, 123 injured). Baghdad Governorate followed with 55 killed and 179 injured. Salahuddin came third, with 15 killed and 43 injured.

Baghdad has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake IS-occupied areas in 2016.

Karrada had been the scene of one of Baghdad’s deadliest attacks in 2016 when separate suicide bombings left 300 people dead in one day. The incident forced the resignation of Iraq’s former interior minister.
