Scores Killed and Injured in Syria Fighting, War Toll So Far 475,000 Killed, 14 Millions Injured and Displaced

July 16, 2017

Editor's Note:

The coalition which fights the Islamic State and other Sunni groups in Syria consists of US-led NATO forces, Russian forces, Syrian Alewite government forces, Iranian-backed Shi'i militias, and Kurdish peshmerga forces. The coalition's continuous attacks have resulted in the killing of thousands of Iraqi and Syrian Sunni Muslim Arabs and the eviction of millions of them as a result of the destruction of their cities and villages.

The end outcome is going to be the weakening and possible dismantling of Iraqi and Syrian states as well as the eviction (ethnic cleansing of) Sunni Muslim Arabs, particularly from the upper Euphrates region of northwestern Iraq and northeastern Syria.

The larger context for understanding the Syrian war (and other wars in the Middle East) is that it contributes to the implementation of the Zionist-Israeli plan of destroying the Arab Middle Eastern states in preparation for the establishment of the greater Israeli empire, from the Nile of Egypt to the Euphrates of Iraq.

30 dead and injured in a targeting of a gathering of the regime’s allied militiamen in the far east of Homs dessert and in a counter attack

SOUHR, 16/07/2017

The SOHR learned from several reliable sources that a violent explosion rocked Hmyma area, located at the far east of Homs dessert, at the administrative borders with Deir Ezzor Province. The explosion was caused by an ISIS booby-trapped car that targeted a gathering of the regime’s allied militiamen, of Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities. The explosion was followed by a violent counter attack carried out by ISIS on positions of the regime forces and their allied militiamen, of Syrian, Lebanese, Asian and Iranian nationalities. Cross-sources confirmed that about 30 elements, the majority of whom are non-Syrians, were killed and injured in this explosion and in the clashes that followed. Casualties among ISIS were also reported and there is some preliminary information to the effect that ISIS managed to pull some of their bodies from the area.

The SOHR published on the 27th of June 2017 that the regime forces managed to make considerable progress at certain points in the Syrian Desert and to regain control over new areas they had lost in the previous months and years. Thus, the regime forces now control the area extending from Arak fields and Palmyra- Al-Sukhnah road to the Syrian-Iraqi borders and to the south of T2 Station inside the administrative borders of Deir Ezzor Province, through the areas of the 3rd Station, Hmyma, Al-Dli’aat, Al-Sultaniyyeh and Al-Wa’er valley and Dam, approximately 3500 square km of the area of the Syrian desert of which the regime managed to take control in 3 days.

The SOHR also published on the 26th of June that  the regime forces managed to achieve an advancement in new areas in the Syrian Desert, and controlled al-Dli’aat area and Hmyma area, which enabled them to reduce the size of areas controlled by the “Islamic State” organization in the Syrian Desert and force it to withdraw from several areas under an intense shelling and bombing by the regime forces and their allied militiamen and warplanes, where the clashes caused more casualties in the ranks of both parties.

The regime forces shell the western countryside of Idlib and calm follows tensions in Jisr Al-Shughur between Turkestan and Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham

SOUHR, 16/07/2017

Idlib Province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: the regime forces shelled after midnight areas in Bdama town in the western countryside of Jisr Al-Shughur and at the western outskirts of Jisr Al-Shughur city. No casualties were reported. In addition, a girl was killed and several others were injured in shelling by the regime forces this morning on areas in Jisr Al-Shughur city in the western countryside of Idlib. Meanwhile, cautious calm prevails in Jisr Al-Shughur city, against a backdrop of tensions resulting from the mobilization carried out by The Turkistan Islamic Party and Ahrar Al-Sham Islamic Movement, after the former accused the latter of arresting Uzbek and Turkestani elements in the ranks of the Party. The SOHR activists observed the vehicles of the latter touring the streets of Jisr Al-Shughur city while barriers and checkpoints are deployed by both parties. Intermediaries are trying to settle the dispute, restore calm and bring the views of both parties closer to put an end to such disputes.

The SOHR published last night that tensions still persist in the eastern countryside of Idlib, in conjunction with continued alert in the ranks of Ahrar Al-Sham Movement and Hayyaat Tahrir al-Sham, amid fears and alert among the people of Saraqeb and Tel al-Toqan and other areas in the eastern countryside of Idlib because of the clashes that took place between both parties in the vicinity of Tel Toqan area. Local sources asserted that both Ahrar al-Sham and Tahrir al-Sham brought reinforcements and fortified their positions and points in the vicinity of Tel Toqan and Saraqeb, amid warnings issued by the people of the town of Saraqeb, that they will respond to any attack on their town, while mediations are being carried out by military and “legitimate” figures to reach full truce, after talks about an agreement reached between both parties to exchange captives and prisoners and to appoint a “Sharia Committee” to settle the dispute and remove the checkpoints set by both parties.

Local sources informed the SOHR on Friday night that violent clashes broke out between the fighters of Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham and those of Ahrar Al-Sham Movement in Tal Al-Toqan area in the eastern countryside of Idlib. Local sources also confirmed that clashes came as a result of an attack by Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham on the town where Ahrar Al-Sham Movement is present, causing several injuries. Preliminary information was reported about the fall of civilian fatalities. However, information about the party that managed to take control of the village is still contradictory. Local sources believed that such clashes broke out as a result of a dispute that arose between both parties over electricity access and the operation of the water company. The area is currently on alert, amid fears of escalation.

Landmine explosion in Al-Raqqah leaves more casualties and continued fighting in areas there

SOUHR, 16/07/2017

Al-Raqqah Province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: a man was killed and several others were injured in an explosion of a landmine that was planted by ISIS in Tal Al-Bay’ah area, north of Al-Raqqah, amid violent clashes between the SDF backed by the US Special Forces on one hand and ISIS on the other in areas in Al-Raqqah city. Clashes were accompanied by an exchange of shelling between both parties.

The SOHR published Friday morning, the 14th of July 2017 that the Syria Democratic Forces were able to enter the outskirts of Al-Rawda neighborhood after successfully taking full control of Al-Batani neighborhood, which is adjacent to the neighborhoods of Al-Rawda and Rumaila in the northwestern section of the city. These clashes coincided with violent clashes between the Syria Democratic Forces and ISIS elements in the Old City. The “Euphrates Wrath” Operation Forces failed to maintain their control over the new points and locations to which they advanced in the Old City, as a result of the intense sniper fire and the continued escalation of targeting by bomb-carrying drones, and due to intense mine-planting by the organization and its fortification of areas of its presence, which forced the “Euphrates Wrath” Operation Forces to retreat from these points.

The SOHR also learned that also learned that the clashes are taking place at a varying rate of violence between the Syria Democratic Forces and the “Islamic State” organization in the Euphrates Basin housing units in Al-Dar’eiyah area in the western part of Al-Raqqah city. Whereas, the Syria Democratic Forces continue their sweeping ad securing operations of the neighborhoods of Al-Bareed and Al-Qasyeh, west of the city, while the “Islamic State” organization is carrying out counter-attacks on sites to which the Syria Democratic Forces had advanced in Hisham Ibn Abdul Malik neighborhood, amid continuation of intense flights of Apache helicopters in the skies of the city and its participation in the fight against the organization, with successive bombardments by the International Coalition warplanes on sites controlled by the organization. In addition, military reinforcements continue to arrive to Al-Raqqah city, in preparation for the decisive battle, through which the “Euphrates Wrath” Operation Forces are aiming to control the entire city of Al-Raqqah.

The regime forces shell south of Damascus and shells hit the western outskirts of Aleppo

SOUHR, 16/07/2017

Damascus Province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: the regime forces shelled after midnight areas in Al-Tadamon neighborhood, west of Damascus. No casualties were reported.

Aleppo Province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: the Syria Democratic Forces shelled after midnight areas in Darat ‘Azza town in the western countryside of Aleppo. No casualties were reported. Several shells also fell after midnight on areas in the regime-controlled Jam’eyyat Al-Zahraa neighborhood, west Aleppo. Likewise, no casualties were reported. In response, the regime forces shelled areas in the vicinity of the neighborhood.

After torturing two young men about two weeks ago by two members of self-defense forces… Field execution carried out against a young man by members in military uniforms of SDF

SOUHR, 16/07/2017

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights obtained a copy of a video showing fighters in military uniforms of the Syria Democratic Forces; speaking Arabic and Kurdish while they were in a demolished house, in front of them there were corpses of 2 men who were in military uniforms, in addition to a young man in civilian clothes on his knees with his hands tied behind his back, and the video showed one of the members trying to prevent one of the other members from shooting him, but the other member shot the young man directly and he killed him instantly. Activists and people accused the Syria Democratic Forces of killing the young man during the “Euphrates Wrath” Operation which was started on the 6th of November 2016, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights continues to investigate this killing incident and the crime committed against the young man in an attempt to find the culprits, to know their identity and the forces they belong to, so that they can get their punishment for what they have done, and also to check the place and time of this crime.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had received in early July 2017 a copy of a video showing 2 handcuffed young men dropped on the ground, under the pretext of the investigation with them, where the video showed 2 members of the Self-Defense Forces of the Democratic Self-Administration while they were beating, torturing and humiliating both youths, on the grounds of the search for members of the “Islamic State” organization, where one of them was hit on the head with a small plastic table, which aroused public discontent among citizens from the torture and beat of these two young men.

We in the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights call for Democratic Self-Administration and the leadership of the Self-Defense forces to respect the International covenants and the human rights and not to infringement them, also we call for immediate and public accountability of the 2 members who perpetrated this violation against arrested citizens, and we call upon the leadership of the Self-Defense forces of the Democratic Self-Administration to promote the respect of human rights among their combatants, where the arrest of citizens who were in areas controlled by the “Islamic State” organization, loyalists and supporters of organization do not justify exposing them to torture or insult, also we call the leadership of the Internal Kurdish Security Forces and the Asayish Forces for the immediate release of all detainees they have who were arrested due to political or intellectual backgrounds, and also all the prisoners of conscience, because the Syrian people revolted against the regime of Bashar al-Assad to get rid of the tyranny regime, and transition to a State of justice, democracy, liberty and equality, and not to be subjected to torture and arrest by the forces that came with the purpose of ridding them of the rule of the “Islamic State” organization.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicates that this statistic does not include the 45000 citizens who were killed under torture in the detention centers and prisons of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and the observatory got the information about their death during the period of their detention.

It also doesn’t include the fate of more than 5200 abducted civilians and fighters in the prisons the “Islamic State” organization, in addition to that, it does not include also the fate of more than 4700 prisoners and missing of the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them, and more than 2,000 kidnapped by the rebel and Islamic factions, the “Islamic State” organization and Fateh al-Sham Front (Jabhat Al-Nusra earlier) on charges of the loyalty to the regime.

Also the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the real number of who were killed to be about 85 thousand persons more than the numbers that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights was able to document, because of the extreme secrecy on the number of casualties by the fighting parties, and due to presence of information about civilians casualties the Observatory was unable to document their death, because of the difficulty of reaching some remote areas in Syria.

Also the continued military operations, shelling and explosions have injured more than 2 million Syrian citizens with different injuries and permanent disabilities, while about 12 million other citizens including hundreds of thousands of children and hundreds of thousands of citizen women were displaced between the refuge and the displacement areas, also the infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and private and public property have been destroyed greatly.
