Islamophobia in the US, July 1-8, 2016, CAIR Reports

July 10, 2016

Editorial Note:

Islamphobia (exaggerated and baseless fear of Muslims) has been perpetrated and perpetuated to justify the continuous US wars and invasions of the Muslim World since 1990, in order for the war industry beneficiaries to justify the enormous and unprecedented US national debt, which has reached more than $19 trillion, as a result of the permanent-war military spending.

Tens of thousands of Americans are killed by non-Muslim other Americans every year, in gun violence. However, Islamophobes ignore that fact and focus on an incident or two perpetrated by Muslims in an entire year.

For example, in 2015, there were 53,228 shooting incidents, resulting in the killing of 13,415 Americans. Of these, there were only two incidents perpetrated by Muslims and resulting in the killing of 18 Americans.

The Zionist media, like Fox News and CNN, together with the  war industry agents and Zionist-controlled politicians like Trump, kept mentioning these two incidents while totally ignoring the other 53,226 incidents, which resulted in the killing of 13,398 Americans!

The end outcome is that the American people are indeed actual victims of a continuous warmongering campaign, Islamophobia, and a daily holocaust, perpetrated against them by the war industry beneficiaries and their agents in the media and politics.

Salaam. You might remember former presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas). He was the one who called for America to "patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods." He wants CAIR to stop challenging his un-American proposals.

When he declined to meet with his Muslim constituents in April, we called him out.

Misusing his power as a Senate committee chairperson this week,

he held a hearing that was in many ways a CAIR-bashing session, perhaps as payback for our strong voice.  At the hearing, Islam and American Muslims were put on trial.

CAIR is not going to be silenced.

When we recently shed light on the U.S. Islamophobia Network and its impact with our ground-breaking new report "Confronting Fear," anti-Islam groups attacked CAIR because they want us to cringe and be quiet.

Rather than becoming intimidated, we hired another staff person for our department to monitor and combat Islamophobia to further increase our capacity and effectiveness during this election year.

We are standing up and being vocal. Now is the time for you to stand and continue to stand for values, equality, and justice for all with pride.

We cannot fight hate without you. Please take a minute RIGHT NOW to go online and make a donation so we may reach our goal before the end of Ramadan, which we can meet with your help. [NOTE: Contributions to CAIR are both zakat-eligible and tax-deductible.]

CAIR is here for you. Please be here for CAIR.

Sincerely,

Nihad Awad
National Executive Director

CAIR Calls for Congressional Hearings on Police Shootings in Louisiana, Minnesota

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/7/16) The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for hearings by the House and Senate Judiciary Committees to address public outrage over two police shootings of African-American men in Louisiana and Minnesota in just the past two days and to propose legislation to help prevent such deadly incidents from occurring in the future.

On Wednesday, a Minnesota officer shot and killed 32-year-old Philando Castile while he was in a car with his girlfriend and her child. The aftermath of the shooting was livestreamed on Facebook.

On Tuesday, 37-year-old Alton Sterling was shot and killed during a confrontation with police officers outside a Baton Rouge, La. Video of the shooting was posted online by a community activist. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said it will take the lead in the investigation of that shooting.

Here's How Many Black People Have Been Killed by Police This Year

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

"We grieve for the loss of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling in yet two more police shootings. Institutionalized racism and a consistent lack of accountability are why we continue to see these killings.

"We welcome the U.S. Department of Justice intervention in the Louisiana shooting case and urge similar action to provide for robust and transparent investigations of the Minnesota incident and other recent police shootings of African-American men.

"We call on Congress, in particular the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, to hold hearings designed to address this ongoing issue and to propose legislation to help prevent these tragic incidents from occurring in the future."

CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said: "We call on federal officials to investigate the shooting of Philando Castile and for a thorough review of police policies, hiring and training in the wake of this tragedy."

CAIR sought action following previous police-involved killings of African-American men and boys.

CAIR: GOP '
Anti-Terrorism' Package Would Result in DHS Investigating Beliefs of Ordinary Muslims

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/5/16) - The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said raised constitutional concerns regarding the House Republican "anti-terrorism" package assembled by Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and said it would result in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) investigating the religious and political beliefs of ordinary Muslims.

This week, House Republicans plan to vote on a bill (Homeland Safety and Security Act [H.R. 5611]) that would inevitably result in the religious profiling of ordinary American Muslims by creating an office in DHS to "counter radical Islamist terrorism in the United States" by "identifying populations targeted by radical Islamist terrorism propaganda" and managing "outreach and engagement activities. . .directed toward communities at risk for radicalization and recruitment for radical Islamist terrorism activities."

SEE: Homeland Safety and Security Act (H.R. 5611)
On Tap in the House: Guns, Terrorism and Trump

In a statement by CAIR Government Affairs Department Director Robert McCaw on the "Homeland Safety and Security Act:"

"The House Republican 'anti-terrorism' package unconstitutionally supports counterterrorism measures that would inevitably result in the singling out and profiling of ordinary American Muslims based on their religious and political beliefs.

"The American Muslim community utterly rejects violent extremism. Creating an office that narrowly shifts the DHS counterterrorism strategy away from following actual leads and preventing illegal and violent acts, to monitoring the thoughts and beliefs of American citizens is akin to religious McCarthyism.

"Republicans in Congress should listen to our nation's law enforcement leaders, like FBI director James Comey, who recently remarked that American Muslims 'do not want people committing violence, either in their community or in the name of their faith, and so some of our most productive relationships are with people who see things and tell us things who happen to be Muslim.'

"We believe that religious and ethnic profiling is unconstitutional and should not serve as the basis of our nation's national security strategy. Congress should continue to support measures that pursue criminal actions, not religious or political beliefs."

CAIR-NY Asks NYPD to Probe Bias Motive for Attack on Muslim Outside Brooklyn Mosque

(NEW YORK, NY, 7/4/16)

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today called on the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to investigate a possible bias motive for an alleged attack on a Muslim youth outside a Brooklyn mosque.

Ahmad Emrech, 16, was reportedly attacked by a man early Sunday morning as he was taking a break from late night prayers outside the Muslim Community Center on 3rd Avenue and 53rd Street in Brooklyn. Another youth, also 16, was also reportedly chased and attacked when he rode his bike past the assailant as Emrech was being beaten. The assailant was reportedly heard shouting slurs at his victims, including, "You f**king terrorist," and, "You Muslims are the cause of all the problems of the world."
Emrech was punched, thrown to the ground, kicked in the face and stomped on. He sustained a concussion, cuts, bruises, and severe swelling to his eye, head and face. He was taken to Lutheran Hospital for treatment. The second victim also suffered from a swollen black eye.

"The slurs heard during the assault indicate that the attack may have been fueled by hatred of the victims' faith, thereby warranting an investigation by law enforcement into a possible bias motive," said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher.
Nasher also noted that the Muslim Community Center had repeatedly asked the local precinct to increase patrols in the area during the hours of late night prayers during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and has experienced other recent incidents such as vandalism.
She added: "This center reached out to those who were supposed to protect them. The Muslim community now calls on the same authorities to thoroughly investigate this attack and bring the alleged assailant to justice."

Nasher noted that incidents targeting American Muslims and their religious institutions have spiked in recent months, with two other assaults in NYC in June.

Community Advisory - ADC Alarmed by Hate Crimes, Threats to places of Worship

Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | July 3, 2016  -

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is alarmed by the significant rise in violent hate rhetoric and crimes targeting the Arab and Muslim American communities.  The attacks are coming as millions of Muslim Americans prepare to celebrate Eid Al Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan.

Early Sunday morning a Muslim doctor was shot and stabbed outside a Texas mosque. Late last week two Arab men were shot near a Minneapolis mosque as they were on their way to prayer. These are just two of the many examples of violent hate crimes targeting respective communities. ADC urges community members to take all threats seriously, and work with law enforcement to protect all religious institutions, including mosques during Eid Al-Fitr Prayers and celebrations.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offers a number of valuable resources which provide information on how to protect a place of worship Much of the information provided is made available through the DHS – Hometown Security Program. ADC reminds its members and greater community to be safe and exercise precaution. Please keep the following precautionary advisory tips in mind.

If you feel you have been a victim of a hate crime, of if any individual or place of worship needs any assistance with any of the above, including dealing with law enforcement, please contact the ADC Pro Bono Legal Department at 202-244-2990 or to legal@adc.org.

Precaution Advisory

  • Connect: Reach out and develop relationships in your community, including local law enforcement. Having these relationships established before an incident occurs can help speed up the response when something happens, or when a threat is imminent. It is advisable to find out whether your place of worship has an open line of communication with law enforcement. If there is no line of communication, it is advised that one be established. A request for law enforcement presence should be made with law enforcement prior to the Eid prayer.
  • Plan: Take time now to plan on how you will handle a security event should one occur. Mosque leaders are encouraged to have an emergency plan that can be implemented should the need arise.  Be familiar with all the exits to your place of worship, in case the building is attacked.
  • Train: Provide employees and members of the congregation with training resources and exercise your plan often. The best laid plan must be exercised in order to be effective.
  • If finances allow, mosques should retain armed security personnel to protect the premise during Eid prayer and celebrations.
  • If you see someone suspicious at the place of worship, please contact law enforcement immediately.

Department of Homeland Security Resources

  • Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) Initiative (NSI) information is available by clicking here. SAR training for private sector partners is located here
  • DHS Infrastructure Protection works with community members to enhance overall security infrastructure at places of worship. CAIR-Cleveland Commends Officials for Swift Apology Over 'ISIS Pledge' Incident

(CLEVELAND, OH, 7/3/16) The Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland) today commended elected and law enforcement officials in Avon, Ohio, for their swift apology following an incident in which a Muslim man was hospitalized after falsely being accused of "pledging allegiance to ISIS" by a hotel desk clerk.

Ahmed Al Menhali, of the United Arab Emirates, received that apology from Avon's mayor, police chief and law director for an incident Wednesday in which he was pinned to the ground and handcuffed by police. The apology took place Saturday night at the CAIR-Cleveland office.

CAIR Says Donald Trump's 'Hibi-Jabis' Reply Endangers Muslim Women

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/1/16)

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's apparent support for an Islamophobic town hall question will endanger American Muslim women.

During a question-and-answer session yesterday at a town hall event in Manchester, N.H., an audience member asked, "Why aren't we putting our military retirees on that border or in TSA? Get rid of all these hibi-jabis they wear at TSA?"

[NOTE: The questioner was referring to the "hijab," or Islamic head scarf worn by Muslim women. Women who wear Islamic attire are often the targets of bigotry or physical attacks.]

Trump seemed to support the questioner's bigoted views when he responded, "I understand". . ."You know, and we are looking at that," "And we are looking at that. We're looking at a lot of things."

Video: Trump 'Looking at' Replacing Hijab-Wearing TSA Staff with Vets

"By appearing to endorse the bigoted views of one of his supporters, Donald Trump is placing all American Muslim women who wear Islamic attire in danger," said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. "American Muslims, and particularly Muslim women, are facing an unprecedented spike in discrimination and hate attacks, due in no small part to Donald Trump's Islamophobic rhetoric and policy proposals."

McCaw added that the proposed removal of Muslim TSA staffers devalues the crucial work they do on a daily basis to protect the nation.

He noted that just yesterday, CAIR's Minnesota chapter held a news conference to call on the Minneapolis Police Department and the FBI to investigate a possible bias motive for a Wednesday shooting in which the attacker allegedly made disparaging remarks about Muslims before opening fire.

Video: CAIR-MN Calls for Hate Crime Probe of Shooting Attack on Muslim Youth

Also today, CAIR is investigating an incident in which a Muslim was hospitalized following an interaction with police in Ohio resulting from a false claim that the man was on his phone "pledging his allegiance to ISIS."

SEE: Ohio Hotel Clerk's 911 Call About ISIS Causes Intense Police Response, Muslim Patron's Collapse

CAIR recently demanded that Trump "stop the bigotry" after he falsely claimed on Fox News that assimilation of American Muslims is "pretty close" to nonexistent and that a "percentage" of American Muslims "want to do what this maniac did in Orlando." Trump also repeated his call for surveillance of American mosque.

Earlier this year, CAIR said Donald Trump's continued use of a debunked myth about U.S. Gen. John Pershing executing Muslim prisoners in the Philippines using bullets dipped in pig's blood was endangering ordinary American Muslims who were already facing a surge in hate.

SEE: CAIR Tells Donald Trump: 'Stop the Bigotry'

CAIR has previously stated that Trump's pig's blood claim and other instances of his Islamophobic rhetoric, including his calling for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, his false claim that "Islam hates us," his refusal to rule out special IDs for American Muslims, and his willingness to consider closing down American mosques place millions of innocent, law-abiding citizens in the American Muslim community at risk.

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide since the Paris terror attacks, the San Bernardino shootings and Trump's bigoted call for a complete ban on Muslims entering the United States.

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights group is asking Muslim community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/civil-rights/report-an-incident/view/form.html

Muslim woman reveals attack and strip-searching by Chicago cops: ‘The ultimate horror’

Brad Reed
30 Jun 2016 at 18:30 ET

A Muslim woman running to catch a train in Chicago last year was tackled and arrested for no reason — and now she’s claiming to be a victim of racial profiling.

CBS Chicago is reporting that Itemad “Angel” Almatar last year was running to make a train at the State/Lake station when she was tackled by several officers who tore off her hijab and opened up a backpack that contained food she had to end her Ramadan fast.

The police arrested her and charged her with reckless conduct and resisting arrest, although this week a judge found her not guilty of these charges. Although prosecutors claimed that the police told her to stop as they chased her up the stairs, video surveillance footage shows that no other passengers climbing the stairs with her turned around as the police charged up the stairs, which makes it hard to believe they were shouting at anyone.

“She was strip searched, videographed, and at the same time men were allowed to see her naked,” said Imam Malick Mujahid, a Muslim community leader in Chicago. “This is the ultimate horror you can do to a Muslim woman.”

“We know a couple things. There’s a Constitution, and the Constitution says you can’t just grab people for no reason whatsoever,” said Aaron Goldstein, an attorney at the Cook County Public Defender’s office.
