More than 100 Killed and Injured in Taiz

Yemen Times Staff , October 21, 2015

http://www.yementimes.com/

More than 20 civilians were killed and 80 others were injured due to heavy shelling on residential areas by Houthis and forces loyal to Ali Saleh in Taiz on Wednesday.

A local medical source said that the siege on Taiz is preventing doctors from doing their job as medical aid is being banned from entering the city , “ Houthis and Saleh have committed a terrible crime today, it’s horrifying, many of the dead are women and children,  most of the wounded have serious injuries, the cases that reached the hospitals are in critical conditions, we don’t have the necessary medical equipments or staff to accommodate the situation, but we are doing our best.”

According to military sources, around 20 Katyusha rockets hit residential neighborhoods downtown in less than one hour which led to many casualties, “ We expect the number of casualties to increase, these were highly populated neighborhoods.”

From the Streets- Water Crisis in Taiz

The blockade on Taiz imposed by Houthis is preventing water and food to be transferred into the city. The humanitarian situation has worsened tremendously in the past month.  Citizens in Taiz are forced to buy Al Kawthar drinking water from the black market with double and sometimes triple the price. People cannot afford mineral bottled water, and those who can afford them cannot find shops that sell them.

Members of the Water March Campaign Remain Captive by Houthis
Yemen Times Staff

For the eighth day, Houthis continue to detain the organizing committee for the Water March campaign which was planned to move from Ibb to Taiz last Tuesday to break the siege and transfer water to the people of the city.

On the 12th of October, Houthi militants stormed into a hotel in Ibb, and arrested 30 journalists and activists who were in a meeting planning the Water March.

Dozens of women activists protested in Ibb demanding  the release of the activists abducted by Houthi militants on Thursday.

“Houthis are holding a tight siege on Taiz,  preventing food, water, and aid to be delivered to the people, we felt like we had to do something, and there is nothing more peaceful and meaningful than marching into the city carrying water for the civilians,” said one of the journalists involved in the campaign but did not attend the committee meeting.

An activist who plans  to participate  in the Water March said,” we will start the campaign soon, the march was delayed due to the kidnapping of our colleagues, Houthis are threatening to harm anyone who decides to participate in the march, but we are determined to make it happen, and we are preparing to launch it as soon as possible, we have to break the blockade on Taiz.”
