Terrorists, Occupiers and Chaos

By Bill Henderson

Al-Jazeerah, August 21, 2006

Simply put Israel is an occupying force and until it ceases to be an occupying force it has no superior moral standing no matter how superior to its neighbours she may be in certain social justice areas. It is also not immaterial to note that over the last three decades Israel has militarized its economy to such an extent that she now qualifies in a very real sense as a modern day Sparta. During that time she has made a litany of very profound right turns and pro-corporate militarism and business decisions that have seriously eroded social justice within the country. The Israel of today bares less than a passing resemblance to the nation state that she was in the first three decades of her existence.
Jeff Berg   Israel's Superiority Isn't Moral

Israel as occupying force is a ludicrous analysis to those who believe in a Promised Land, but to an unbiased observer, someone who could look at Israel or Northern Ireland or Kashmir through a dispassionate historical perspective, Israel is a recent occupying force.

If somehow over the past six decades Israel could have used it's US patron's largess and it's own acumen to build a thriving Palestinian partner, two successful businesses on the same street with owner's that were partners and friends, Israel wouldn't still be an occupier. Chances are this prosperous peace would have long since killed off Hizbullah in a Lebanon that would love to be another sun filled success story on the same street.

But this lost opportunity (if that hopeful solution was ever possible) is long gone after the past decade of brutal, unjust and increasingly cynically destructive occupation. Palestine is a festering sore and there will be no peace in the Islamic world until there is justice.

Lost opportunities for using soft power in a century of Anglo-American interference in Middle Eastern affairs has culminated in the tragically inept and criminal Bush Administration stirring up an Islamic wasps nest with a 'war on terror' targeting an inflamed Islam and US aggression and occupation of Iraq for strategic self-interest. Real men are already making plans for Tehran.

America's failure to enforce a just and prosperous solution to the Palestinian occupation combined with this Anglo-American history does not allow for a continuing American business control of Middle Eastern oil. The indefensible use of force in Iraq compounds Israel's problem. Alienated Islamic peoples and their governments who crave justice and who no longer see any benefit in American hegemony will increasingly be able to use force as effectively as the increasingly isolated Israelis and the Americans.

And this compounds a big problem for us all because Iraq (and Afghanistan and increased US military presence in Asia) is a signal that the US has taken the resource war path for us all at the end of cheap oil. Bush Admin geopolitics is a frantic rush by an addict to ensure supply. We will use force to seize oil because we did not make the most of our ability to use soft power to westernize the Middle East when we had the opportunity. Now we have no choice but to use force, to be occupiers with military necessity seriously eroding social justice at home, no longer democrats but imperialists, truly a great Satan that deserves to lose.
