The Many Lies of William Safire

by Mike Whitney

Al-Jazeerah, 11/28/03

William Safire proves once again, why an overactive imagination and a
computer keyboard are not always a good combination. Safire’s latest
ruminations lead us down the “shadowy path of international terrorism”, only
to uncover…absolutely nothing! The gist of Safire’s contention, that a
connection exists between Al Qaeda and Saddam, is grounded in uncorroborated allegations, rumor and mumbo-jumbo.

Is he vying for a spot on the Bush Administration? Safire is not deterred by the fact that every nugget of intelligence he digs up has been summarily dismissed and discredited by the CIA. Instead, he looks to the dubious anecdotal evidence provided by Dept of defense’s Douglas Feith.

Feith, you may recall, was the head of DOD’s now defunct, Office of Special Plans, the dept that contributed nearly every bit of false or misleading information leading up to the War in Iraq. Apparently, Feith has not lost his appetite for “sexing up” the facts to accommodate a good story.

By the way, it was the OSP that fabricated intelligence prior to the war,
not the CIA. The Bush Administration has tried to obscure that fact to avoid
accountability.

Even with his thesis on shaky ground, the agile Safire opines, “the burden
of proof has shifted to those still grimly in denial.”
What? Has he lost his marbles?

This is the kind of unsubstantiated drivel we have come to expect on
right-wing radio not from the NY Times fiery Likudnik.
Safire needs a rest. He did his part to provide the flawed logic and
demagoguery that drove the country to war with a defenseless enemy. Now, his
habit of stacking lie on lie like cord-wood is getting tiresome. He needs
some “off time”.

He should go back to doing what he does best, defending the genocidal
policies of the Sharon government or championing the reckless adventurism of
the US war machine.

Leave the spy novels to P.D.James.
