From O.J. Simpson to Manika Lewinsky to Michael Jackson: The concerns of the mainstream media in North America

By Hilmi Salem

Al-Jazeerah, 11/26/03

Once again, the Michael Jackson's story is back to the TV screens and other media outlets in North America (the US and Canada). I remember I wrote last year an article in regard to M. Jackson, while the US, the UK and Israel were then and are still heavily involved in wars. This is despite the fact that those totalitarian and corrupt Arab regimes, which indeed need to be changed, have been brought to power and strongly supported by the US and the UK, and thus they have been serving, very very well, the Western interests, over many decades.

Here we are again. The American and Canadian media are heavily involved in the process of brainwashing of their audiences in the US and Canada, as those audiences have seen, just in the last few days, so much coverage of the M. Jackson's story. Meanwhile, the American and Canadian media have very little or no coverage at all, regarding many important issues related to the Middle East and other places in the world. For example, the issues of Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan have been almost forgotten by the mainstream media in N. America.

As we see, so much attention and coverage are focussed on the M. Jackson's story by the N. American media. This is at the same time when much more important issues (which touch, on a daily basis, the lives of many Americans, Canadians, Middle Easterners, Africans, Latin Americans, and many other peoples around the world) are ignored.

Such a silliness by the N. American media is a matter of a long and highly planned and well sophisticated and advanced procedure of brainwashing of the public, in order to divert the public's attention from the daily killing of American soldiers and the daily massacres against Iraqi, Afghani and Palestinian civilians, as a result of the wars there.

Such a silliness is a joint cooperation among media outlets, intelligence bodies, politicians and big corporations, in order to cover up the daily death of American soldiers and their allies, as well as the daily killing of innocent civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine.

It is well known that from time to time the media in N. Amercia need to bring their audiences some fabricated and silly stories that make big news. This means that those audiences must forget other important events, and focus only on those particular stories (such as M. Jackson's), which the media want people to know very much about and also to become important part of their daily lives, based on the fact that those stories are given long periods of time of the media coverage.

Such stories, of a wide concern for the N. American media, include (just to mention a few that took (or are still taking) place in the last few years): the O.J. Simpson's story, the Monica Lewinsky's story, the Cuban's young boy's story (which then became a hot issue for the election campaign between the former President Bill Clinton and the present President GW Bush, especially in Florida, where the mess of the last election took place, and which resulted in the appointment of GW Bush president by the US Supreme Court), and now (as also before) the Michael Jackson's story.

Let us wait and see how the N. American media will make the Michael Jackson's story a big bang, and how the issue of the daily killing of American soldiers and their allies, and the wars against the Iraqi people, the Afghani people, and the Palestinian people have become, for the majority of North American media, no priority news at all.
