Get out while the going is good

 Gulf News
  29-06-2003

The aggression against the coalition forces in Iraq is increasing daily. At one time, it could be considered isolated incidents from disgruntled Iraqis or past Baath Party members. Now, however, the frequency of attacks and the manner in which they are conducted, implies they are more than mere frustration or anger expressed in violence. The attacks would seem to have a greater degree of organisation about them; many of the victims appear to have been singled out, or identified, even when the troops are off-duty, thereby adding greater risk to their presence in Iraq.

It is perhaps too easy to say that the attacks are the nascent steps of a guerrilla force, which is building up a resistance to the coalition forces. For there is little evidence of that - and since none of the perpetrators has yet been caught (alive) the motive of the attacks upon the coalition troops is difficult to gauge. Yet the history of Iraq is such that the people are known to be proud of their nation and, indeed, their long and historic contributions to civilisation. Therefore it cannot be easy many for Iraqis to accept the domination of their country that has taken place by foreigners.

Compounded to that is the fact that if Iraqis were hoping for some "quick-fix" by the western forces for the woes they have faced for more than a decade - some would say up to 30 years of agony - then they will be greatly disappointed by what little action has been taken by the coalition forces to date to remedy the situation. Even supporters of the deposed old regime, including those who might have welcomed the occupation by the foreign forces, are beginning to show impatience with what is happening - or not happening. Such impatience can and is being expressed in the only way many know how - by violence towards their occupiers.

For the good of Iraq, for the good of the coalition forces and to save lives all round, it is best the American-led administration get out of Iraq as soon as possible and allow the Iraqi people to run their own country.
