In a world of their own making

Gulf News, 30-07-2003

Apparently the American administration views the events in Iraq differently to most other people. It is almost as if a different battle is taking place. But the days when a government can use propaganda, extolling the virtues of their own side, are long past: they died with the lives of the Vietnamese and Americans. Now, with the advent of satellite television, wars are brought to the sitting-rooms of a worldwide audience.

The media was anxious not to be seen being misled once the invasion of Iraq became a reality. However, it was not to be, since the American media allowed itself to become beguiled again and became overly patriotic. The exceptions were harshly criticised for questioning the judgment of officials, or even the purpose of war.

That situation still exists, despite the war in Iraq being officially declared as "over" by the American president. On these pages an article by the U.S. deputy defence secretary implies that what America is doing is being received with open arms and all is well in Iraq. Wish that it was so, but it is not. Yet it does raise the question, exactly what was the defence secretary shown while in Iraq?
