U.S. considers wider role for UN in Iraq Gulf News 30-08-2003 America is having second thoughts about running the affairs of Iraq almost to the exclusion of everyone else. Certainly without UN approval and support, anyway. The loss of more troops since the officially-declared "end of hostilities" than before, has set not only the American general public thinking, but also American lawmakers. Especially those Democrat lawmakers who consider themselves in the running to stand against the American president in the 2004 elections. With the popularity of Bush slipping - although at over 50 percentage points, still high - Bush supporters will be looking for a way in which the president can extricate himself from the "quagmire", although the administration refuses to accept they are in such a situation. The possibility of UN forces taking over in Iraq might be welcomed by Iraqis and the international community, but if it does take place, it should be noted that it is conditional. America insists that the overall commander of any forces there should be an American. While conceding that it is always so in Nato, and that American firepower is supreme, it is not firepower that is needed, it is acumen and the ability to get an affective restoration plan in progress. The ability to make friends and influence people would not go amiss, either
