Major Verses of the Holy Qur'an, Ommahat El-Kitab

A List Prepared By Hassan Ali El-Najjar

Al-Jazeerah,  23 of Ramadan 1425 Hijri

This is an ongoing project, intended to include major verses of the Holy Qur'an, known as Ommahat El-Kitab. It may take years to finish. The first stage is listing these verses down. The second is indexing them. The third is interpretation Insha Allah (God Willing).

The following is a list of major verses of the Holy Qur'an, Ommahat El-Kitab (Mother verses of the Book), revised by Hassan Ali El-Najjar, using the translation of A. Yusuf Ali (May mercy of God be upon him), published by Amana Corp, in 1983. The text is mainly Yusuf Ali's. Hassan Ali El-Najjar's intervention occurs only when a clearer meaning is warranted as a result of a difference between the Arabic text and the translation. One example is the names of messengers of God. Yusuf Ali uses the Anglicized names, like Abraham and Isaac. El-Najjar introduces the Arabic names Ibrahim and Is'haq, then he puts the Anglicized name between parentheses. The apostrophe in Is'haq stands for a glottal Arabic sound that is not used by native speakers of English. Another example is replacing the old English forms, like hath, with the modern English "has."

The following list of quotations cite numbers of verses but not necessarily representing the entire verse. Readers should go back the Qur'anic text for a complete verse or quotation.

Mother Verses of the Book:

Verse 7 of Al-Omran (Chapter III of the Holy Qur'an:

"He it is Who has sent down to thee  the Book. In it are verses basic or fundamental of established meaning (Ommul Kitab: Mother of the Book); They are the foundation of the Book. Others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord and searching for its hidden meanings. But no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge. They say: We believe in the Book, the whole of it is from our Lord, and none will grasp the message except those of reasoning (mind or understanding)."

Some of the Ommahat El-Kitab (Mother verses of the Book) Surat Al-Baqara, Chapter II of the Holy Qur'an:

1. In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

2. We sent not an apostle except (to teach) in the language of his (own) people, in order to make (things) clear to them (The Holy Qur'an, XIV, 4).

3. (Remember) Noah, when he cried (to Us) a foretime: We listened to his (prayer) and delivered him and his family from the great distress (The Holy Qur'an, XXI, 76).

4. Ibrahim (Abraham) said: O my Lord ! Make this city one of peace and security, and preserve me and my sons from worshipping idols. (The Holy Qur'an, XIV, 35).

5. Remember ! Moussa (Moses) said to his people: "Call to mind the favor of God to you when He delivered you from the people of Pharaoh." (The Holy Qur'an, XIV, 6).

6. Behold ! The Angels said: "O Mary ! Allah (God) gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, his name will be the Messiah (Christ) Jesus, the son of Mariam (Mary), held in honour in this world and the hereafter, and of those nearest to God (The Holy Qur'an, III, 45).

7. (Oh Muhammed) Thou art indeed one of the apostles, on a straight way. It is a revelation sent down by (Him), the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. In order that thou may admonish a people, whose fathers had received no admonition, and who therefore remain heedless (of the signs of God). (The Holy Qur'an, XXXVI, 3-6)

8. O Children of Israel ! Call to mind the (special) favor, which I bestowed upon you, and fulfill your Covenant with Me, (so that) I fulfill My Covenant with you, and fear none but Me (The Holy Qur'an, II, 40), Yusuf Ali's Translation.

9. And remember We took a Covenant from the Children of Israel (to the effect): Worship none but God; treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the people; be steadfast in prayer; and practice regular charity. Then did ye turn back, except a few among you, and ye backside (The Holy Qur'an, II, 83), Yusuf Ali's Translation.

10. And who is more unjust than he who forbids that in places for the worship of God, God's name should be celebrated? Whose zeal is to ruin them? It was not fitting that such should themselves enter them except in fear. For them there is nothing but disgrace in this world, and in the world to come an exceeding torment (The Holy Qur'an, II, 114), Yusuf Ali's Translation.

11. Ibrahim (Abraham) was tried by his Lord with certain commands, which he fulfilled. He (God) said: "I will make the an Imam (religious leader) to the nations. He (Ibrahim) pleaded: "And also (Imams) from my offspring !" He (God) answered: "But my promise is not within the reach of evil-doers." (The Holy Qur'an, II, 124), Yusuf Ali's Translation.

12. Ibrahim (Abraham) and Isma'il raised the foundations of the House (House of God in Makkah, with this prayer): "Our Lord ! Accept (this service) from us: For thou art the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (II, 127).

13. "Our Lord ! Make of us Muslims, bowing to Thy (Will); and of our progeny a people Muslim, bowing to Thy (Will); and show us our places for the celebration of (due) rites; And turn unto us (in Mercy); For Thou art the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful." (II, 128).

14. "Our Lord ! Send amongst them an apostle of their own, who shall rehearse Thy Signs to them and instruct them in scripture and wisdom, and sanctify them: For Thou art the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (II, 129).

15. "And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) but such as debase their souls with folly? Him We chose and rendered pure in this world: And he will be in the hereafter in the ranks of the Righteous." (II, 130).

16. "Behold ! his Lord said to him: Be a Muslim (bow thy will to Me)." He (Ibrahim) said: "I am a Muslim (I bow my will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the universe." (II, 131).

17. "And this was the legacy that Ibrahim (Abraham) left to his sons, and so did Yaqoob (Jacob); "Oh my sons ! God has chosen the faith for you ; then die not except as Muslims (bowing your will to God)." (II, 132).

18. "Were ye witnesses when death appeared before Yaqoob (Jacob)? Behold, he said to his sons: "What will ye worship after me?" They said: "We shall worship thy God and the God of they father fathers, - Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma'il, and Is'haq (Isaac) -, the One (True) God, to Him we are Muslims (bow in submission)." (II, 133).

19. "They say: "Become Jews or Christians if ye would be guided (to salvation)." Say thou: "Nay ! (I would rather) the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) the true, and he joined not gods with God." (II, 135).

20. "Say ye: "W believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma'il, Is'haq (Isaac), Yaqoob (Jacob), and the tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them, and we are (bowing to God) Muslims to Him." (II, 136).

21. "Thus we have made of you an Ummat (a Nation) justly balanced. That ye might be witnesses over the nations, and the apostle (Muhammed) a witness over yourselves." (II, 143).

22. "Now shall we turn thee to a Qibla (direction) that shall please thee. Turn then thy face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque (the Ka'aba in Makkah)." (II, 144).

23. "And say not of those who are slain in the way of God: "They are dead." nay, they are living , though ye perceive (it) not." (II, 154).

24. "Be sure  We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits  (of your toil) but give glad tidings to who patiently persevere." (II, 155).

25. "Who say when afflicted with calamity: "To God we belong and to Him is our return." (II, 156).

26. "They are those on whom (descend) blessings from God, and Mercy and they are the ones that receive guidance." (II, 157).

27. "And your God is One God. There is no God but He, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." (II, 163).

28. "The creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alteration of the night and the day ... are signs for people who reason." (II, 164).

29. "He hath only forbidden you dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked than that of God. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits. Then, he is guiltless, for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful" (II, 173).

30. "O ye who believe! The law of equality is prescribed to you in cases of murder." (II, 178).

31. "In the law of equality, there is (saving of) life for you, O ye people of understanding, that ye may restrain yourselves." (II, 179).

32. "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint" (II, 183).

33. "Ramadhan is the month in which the Qur'an was sent down, as a guide to mankind. It also (includes) clear signs for guidance and judgment." (II, 185).

34. "And do not eat up (earn) your money among yourselves through deceit,  nor use it as bait (bribe) for rulers with the intent of knowingly and deceitfully eating up a portion of people's money." (II, 188).

39. "Our Lord ! Give us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire." (II, 201).

40. "There is a type of people whose speech about this world's life may dazzle you, and he calls Allah to witness about what is in his heart. Yet, he is the most contentious of enemies." (II, 204).

43. "Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs we have sent them. But if anyone, after Allah's favor has come to him, substitutes (something else), Allah is strict in Punishment." (II, 211).

44. "Or do you think that you shall enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those before you? They encountered suffering and adversity, and were so shaken in spirit that even the Apostle and those of faith who were with him cried: When will come the help of God (victory)? Ah ! Verily, the help of God is near." (II, 214).

45. "Fighting has been prescribed for you and you dislike it. But it is possible that you may dislike a thing, which is good for you. And that you may love a thing, which is bad for you. But God knows and you do not (know)."    (II, 216).

46. "Those who believed, and those who immigrated (suffered self-exile) and fought (struggled) in the path of God, they have the hope of the mercy of God, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."   (II, 218).

Ramadan 1427

September 2006

47. "They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them, there is a great sin, and they have benefits to people. But the sin is greater than the benefit. They ask you how much they are to spend. Say: What is beyond your needs (i.e. don't hoard wealth). Thus does God make clear to you His signs in order that you may ponder (about them)."    (II, 219).

48. "Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters) until they believe. A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you."  (II, 221).

53. "For those who take an oath for abstention from their wives, a waiting fro four months is ordained." (II, 226 ).

54. "But if their intention is firm for divorce, God hears and knows all things."  (II, 227).

55. "Divorced women shall wait concerning themselves for three monthly periods. It is not lawful for them to hide what God has created in their wombs, if they have faith in God and the Last Day. And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation. And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable. But men have a degree (of advantage) over them."  (II, 228).

56. "Divorce is (permissible) twice. The parties should either hold together on equitable terms or separate with kindness. It is not lawful for your (men) to take back any of your gifts (from your wives), except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by God. If you (judges) do indeed fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by God, there is no blame on either of them if she give something for her freedom." (II, 229 ).

57. "So if a husband divorces his wife (irrevocably for the third time), he cannot after that remarry her until after she has married another husband, and he has divorced her. In that case, there is no blame on them if they re-unite, provided they feel that they can keep the limits ordained by God."  (II, 230 ).

58. "When you divorce women and they fulfill the (ordained term of three periods), do not prevent them from marrying their former husbands, if they mutually agree on equitable terms." (II, 232).

59. "If any of you die and leave widows behind, they shall wait concerning themselves four months and ten days. When they have fulfilled their term, there is no blame on you if they dispose of themselves (making themselves available for marriage) in a just and reasonable manner." (II, 234).

60. "There is no blame on you if you make an offer of betrothal or hold it in your hears (during a woman's waiting term after her husband's death). God knows that you cherish them in your hearts. But do not make a secret contract with them except in terms honorable, nor resolve on the tie of marriage till the term (of waiting) prescribed is fulfilled." (II, 235).

61. "Observe strictly your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before God in devotion." (II, 238).

62. (II, ).
