More Palestinians Killed as Israel Vows to Press Gaza Offensive

06/11/2006

Palestine Media Center – PMC

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) killed four Palestinians on Saturday after opening fire at them in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoon, according to Palestinian medical sources. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pledged Sunday to press ahead with the deadly offensive in northern Gaza, brushing off international calls to halt the attacks and Palestinian complaints of dwindling supplies of water, food and other staples.

Olmert told his Cabinet on Sunday it was necessary to “considerably reduce the (rocket) fire and prevent terror.” He said Israel has no intention of reoccupying Gaza after last year’s pullout.

“When we reach the conclusion that the effectiveness of the operation is bringing us closer to reaching the goals, we will definitely pull our forces out of Gaza,” he added.

The death toll in Israel’s five-day incursion into the northern Gaza town rose to 48 on Sunday, when four Palestinians, including two Hamas activists, were killed, according to Palestinian health officials.

At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI said he was worried about the “grave deterioration” in the Gaza Strip, and called on all sides to work to stop the bloodshed and immediately resume “direct, serious and concrete negotiations.”

In a weekend statement, the EU called on both Israel and the Palestinians to halt the violence because of the casualties.

“The right of all states to defend themselves does not justify disproportionate use of violence or actions which are contrary to international humanitarian law,” the EU said.

Moreover, Palestinian medical sources in Bethlehem reported that an elderly woman died on wounds sustained during an Israeli military offensive in the West Bank city of Bethlehem; two residents were killed during the attack, and several others were injured.

The source stated that Fatima Abdul-Fattah, in her seventies, was shot and seriously injured on Friday while she was standing on the balcony of her house in Al-Saff Street while the Israeli army was conducting a raid there.

She was hit by two rounds of live ammunition; one in her leg and one in her abdomen, the sources added.

Al-Jazeerah Editor's Note:

Israeli media describe killing civilians as terrorism. However, when Israeli occupation soldiers kill Palestinian civilians, they do not describe the Israeli killers of civilians as terrorists. It's time for Israeli terrorist acts to be described as terrorism.

Israeli occupation forces use the term "arrest" for "kidnapping" Palestinians from their homes. Objective media worldwide should not fall to the Israeli trap. This is kidnapping.

The Israeli occupation of Palestine is illegal under international law. The Israeli occupation government and its occupation forces have no jurisdiction over Palestinians. Only legitimate governments can arrest citizens. It follows that the correct term is "kidnapping" Palestinians, not "arresting" them by Israeli occupation forces.
