A Response to the President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

By Mark Yannone

Al-Jazeerah, May 10, 2006

Editor's Note:

Although the Editor is taking a break from readers’ and authors’ letters and articles he's publishing this response to President Ahmadinejad’s letter, to show that at least there’s an American who cares to answer the letter and another who cares to publish it, hoping that more responses from Americans be written and published.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:

Speaking for myself, one American citizen, I thank you for attempting to communicate with our unelected president.

Clearly, George Bush's "return to sender" response to your letter was inappropriate, insulting, and extremely counterproductive. However, his poll numbers should give you and the rest of the world great assurance that George Bush does not represent America. We are not at war, but our military has been abused to invade sovereign nations and to kill and injure hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.

Yet the American people have shown through their mass demonstrations across the country that we seek peace and cooperation throughout the world, not war and hatred. We have had enough of George Bush's lies, enough of his hunger for war, enough of his endless waste and destruction. We will hold him accountable for his criminal behavior and his violation of his oath of office.

Now is the time to show good faith. Israel must tend to its own business at home--on its own--without American support. The United States and Israel must back away from the borders of Iran, and all foreign troops must leave Iraq and Afghanistan. We expect this, and America expects Iran to respond in kind.

Our various religions are individual choices and do not enter this discussion. All people, of all religions, recognize the difference between good and evil, right and wrong, justice and injustice. We know what behavior leads to war and which path leads to peace. Each of us must choose how we will live and what kind of life we will pass on to our children. When you look at the people of the United States, you can see that the American people choose peace, freedom, and prosperity, and good relations with all nations.

I am but one American, but I am not alone in my opinions. I think the world can see that.

Sincerely,

Mark Yannone
