Abbas still insists that a unity government will be formed or early elections will be held

PNN, (Ramallah) Rashid Hilal Thursday, 28 December 2006

Although the holidays, Eid Al Adha and Christmas, and the rain and snow, have extinguished the volcanic flames between Fateh and Hamas, the return to the issue of a national unity government or early elections remains imminent.

Fateh has not faltered from the specific two-week timetable it imposed indicating that if a unity government had not been formed, early elections would be held.

Hamas rejected the timetable. The party has also indicated that, despite its rejected attempts during past negotiations at finding replacements for the Prime Minister, Haniya will remain.

The Supreme Committee of Forces and Factions will return to the national dialogue after the Eid Al Adha holiday, but without the direct participation of the of the presidency or government, according to national sources. Others from the parties will be present with the power to make decisions, according to PNN's sources.

Hamas' retreat from agreements with President Abbas indicate the party believes that within a few months the blockade will be over. It was also a positive sign for Hamas' ability to retain power that Jordan's King Abdullah II invited Prime Minister Haniya for meetings, in addition to Hamas' meetings with the Egyptian government.
