Israel must work to secure Palestinian truce — Egyptian FM Jordan Times, Sunday, November 30, 2003 CAIRO (AFP) — Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher urged Israel on Saturday to work towards securing a truce to end the quagmire of violence plaguing the Middle East. Speaking ahead of Cairo-hosted inter-Palestinian talks next week, he said Israel cannot expect a "free" ceasefire and demanded that the Jewish state make commitments of its own. "The Palestinian side has confirmed that the two sides must commit to a ceasefire and that (nothing) is for free," Maher told reporters. "If Palestinian organisations have agreed to accept a truce, Israel must act encouragingly," the minister said. Groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad are due to attend the Cairo talks that hope to clinch a halt to anti-Israeli attacks with a view to kickstarting peace talks. The aim of the summit is to "allow the Palestinian people to salvage their rights," Maher said. But the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine wants the Cairo talks to help unify Palestinian politics in order to move forward on the peace process. "There is no Palestinian national unity, no political programme, no unified Palestinian leadership," spokesman Maher Taher told AFP in Cairo by telephone, stressing that the situation must be ironed out.
