Foreigners attacked at fire-stricken Russian university Khaleej Times, (AFP) 30 November 2003 MOSCOW - Skinheads attacked around 10 foreign students at a university in Moscow which days earlier was the site of a devastating fire, Russian media said on Sunday. Several students sustained serious injuries in the attack near a hostel of the People’s Friendship University on Saturday night and have been hospitalised, ITAR-TASS news agency said. Police have detained nine people in connection with the attack. The victims’ nationalities were not immediately clear. Foreign students in Moscow have often come under racist attack in recent years. Meanwhile the deathtoll from a huge November 24 blaze at another of the university’s hostels continued to rise, reaching 38 by Saturday. A further 157 of those caught in the fire remain hospitalised due to their injuries, five of them in critical condition. The fire victims came from more than 20 countries, many in Asia and Africa. The blaze was at first blamed on arsonists, but the authorities have since said they think faulty electrical equipment was the cause. The Peoples’ Friendship University, formerly known as Patrice Lumumba University after the assassinated first prime minister of what is today the Democratic Repic of Congo, was founded in Soviet times.
