32 Killed in Road Crashes

Arab News

KARACHI, 29 November 2003 — At least 32 people were killed and scores of others injured in three separate road accidents in Pakistan’s Northwestern Frontier Province and adjoining areas yesterday.

The accidents were caused by speeding drivers, Pakistan Television reported.

Twenty people were killed and 60 injured when a speeding bus overturned and fell into a roadside ravine in a tribal area near the town of Dera Ismail Khan, some 290 km southwest of Islamabad.

The bus was carrying people to witness a sporting event when the driver lost control trying to overtake another bus.

The injured were taken to hospital where 12 people were listed in critical condition.

Six people were killed and 18 injured after a speeding passenger bus lost control and plunged into a ravine in Swat district, 140 km north of Islamabad.

In the third accident, a Suzuki pick-up carrying eight people fell into a river while negotiating a turn in Gilgit valley close to Swat in the north.

Six of them died instantly while the remaining two received serious injuries. Witnesses said the pick-up was traveling too fast for taking such a sharp turn.

Bomb Blast Outside Police Station

A bomb exploded outside a police station in southern Pakistan, shattering the windows of several nearby homes and shops, but causing no injuries, police and residents said yesterday.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday’s explosion in Jacobabad, a small city about 400 km northeast of the port city of Karachi, said Bahadur Hassan, a police official.

He gave no other details and only said the police were still investigating.

Residents said the bomb exploded at a police station about 2 kilometers from Jacobabad air base, one of Pakistan’s largest. The base was used by US troops to back anti-terrorism operations in neighboring Afghanistan.

“After the explosion, security forces surrounded the area and blocked all roads leading to Jacobabad air base,” said Liaquat Barohi, a local resident.
