Syria slams America, some Arab leaders for war on Iraq

Jordan Times, 3/31/03

DAMASCUS (AP) — Syria's official media criticised some Arab leaders Sunday for assisting US-led attacks on Iraq, while saying America was losing ground in its military campaign against the Iraqis.

“The steadfastness of the Iraqi people and their heroic resistance against the most deadly and destructive modern US and British weaponry has embarrassed those who had gambled on a quick and easy occupation of Iraq,” said the Syrian government mouthpiece, the Tishrin newspaper.

“The coming days will see the humiliation of the invasion troops,” Tishrin said.

The paper said some Arab leaders had “entrapped themselves by offering facilities for the brutal aggression against Iraq ... instead of taking a national stand, or at the very least remaining silent instead of trumpeting the aggression.”

Gulf countries including Kuwait and Bahrain host large numbers of US military personnel taking part in the war in Iraq, while the US Central Command — which runs the coalition's military operations — is based in Qatar.

Recent state-sanctioned protests held in Damascus have seen protesters chant insults against Egypt for its close ties with America and doing too little to oppose the war.

Egypt's foreign minister summoned Syria's ambassador in response to Cairo to complain.

Al Thawra, another Syrian state-run newspaper, said accusations by US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Friday that Damascus was supplying military equipment to Baghdad were “a cover-up for America's blunders on the battlefield.”

The US-led coalition, the paper said, had failed to secure any progress in Iraq and was looking for justifications, such as claiming Syria was helping neighbouring Iraq.
