Rice to meet Palestinian security officials 27 June 2003 JERUSALEM - US President George W. Bush’s national security adviser Condoleezza Rice is to meet with senior Palestinian security officials in the West Bank city of Jericho on Friday evening, a senior Palestinian source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. No other details about the meeting were initially available and there was no official confirmation from US or Israeli officials that Rice would be arriving in the region on Friday. Palestinian officials said earlier in the week that Rice would be meeting on Saturday evening with Palestinian premier Mahmoud Abbas in Jericho, but it was not clear when she was due to arrive in the country. Her trip is aimed at pushing for the implementation of the US-backed roadmap, a blueprint for peace aimed at stopping 33 months of bloodshed and paving the way for the creation of a Palestinian state by 2005. Rice, whose trip follows US Secretary of State Colin Powell’s visit to the region last week, left Washington on Wednesday and is currently in Britain for two days before arriving in the Middle East for talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials on Saturday and Sunday, White House officials said. “She’ll work to build on the progress made during the president’s meetings and on the secretary’s meetings from his recent trips to the region,” spokesman Ari Fleischer said earlier. Israeli public radio said Rice was slated to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom on Sunday.
