Relief for UAE Students in US Arab News DUBAI, 31 January 2003 — Washington’s easing of the controversial racial profiling of Arabs and Muslims has come as good news for the 3,000 Emiratis studying in various US universities. The move means that the UAE students will be relieved from having to re-register 30 days after arrival and one year of continuous presence in America, a US official told Gulf News on Monday. The easing of the system, which took effect on Dec. 25, follows a directive from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). “Things are easing up,” said the embassy official, who asked not to be named. The decision to suspend the registration requirement was made after careful review of the National Security Entry/Exit Registration System (NSEERS) program by DHS, the official said. Part of the reason for the change of tack apparently came from internal pressure, particularly on US educational and medical institutions. NSEERS is believed to have caused huge losses for US health care providers in the $2 billion annual medical tourism industry. Seizing the opportunity, countries such as Germany have rolled out the red carpet for Arab citizens, avoiding hassles at entry points and invasive checks needed to obtain specialized medical care in the US. There were about 3,500 UAE nationals, mostly students, in the US before the Sept. 11 attacks. This number has gone down by 15 percent as some young Emiratis have opted to study at home, the embassy official admitted. |
