Two unarmed Palestinian workers shot dead by trigger-happy Israeli occupation soldiers, 18 Palestinian homes demolished

Khaleej Times, (AFP)

15 December 2003

GAZA CITY - Two Palestinians who were trying to enter Israel from northern Gaza were shot dead by troops overnight while two soldiers were injured during an incursion in the south of the territory, sources on both sides said on Monday.

The two fatalities were part of a group of six Palestinians who were spotted in a closed “security zone” inside the Gaza Strip and close to the border into Israel, Israeli military sources said.

No arms were recovered near the two bodies. One of the other four was arrested while a major search operation had been launched for the remaining trio after they entered Israel.

The sources added that an inquiry had now been opened to determine if the group were “terrorists who were preparing to carry out attacks or if they were Palestinians who wanted to enter into Israel to find work”.

Palestinian security sources confirmed that two men had been killed in the security zone east of Beit Hanoon at around midnight.

The bodies had yet to be returned by the Israelis, the sources said, adding that they were not known to belong to any militant faction.

The latest deaths bring the overall toll since the start of the Palestinian uprising, or intifada, in September 2000 to 3,646, including 2,726 Palestinians and 854 Israelis.

Meanwhile Palestinian sources said that 18 houses had been completely destroyed and another 13 partially destroyed during a six-hour Israeli army incursion near the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis which began around midnight.

Throughout the operation, explosive devices were detonated against the forces and as a result, two Israeli occupation soldiers were lightly injured, the statement added.

“The soldiers received initial medical treatment on the spot and were evacuated to hospital for further treatment.

“In addition, the force came under massive fire including anti-tank missiles and automatic gunfire. Hand grenades were also hurled at the forces. ”
