2 scenarios Picture this 1938 a Jewish family emigrate to Palestine from Vienna. Over the years they learn Arabic they are integrated into society. Some people have an idea of establishing a "Jewish" state. The family and others think that's a silly idea. They still follow their own traditions etc but they are fully integrated into Palestine. No Zionist state is established. There is peace Now picture this a Jewish family from Vienna in 1938 emigrate to Palestine. They do not integrate They think Zionism is the best solution and are happy when the new state of Israel is established in 1948 other Zionists are happy too. There is no peace in the region Which scenario is the sensible one? That's right the first one Which one do we have? The second Speaks for itself. Janice Keenan
Al-Jazeerah op-ed labours under a
misconception Secular India Protests Over Hijab Legislation to France, on Behalf of Sikhs but not for Muslims By Ghulam Muhammed (Al-Jazeerah, August 30, 2004) Op-Ed on Al-Jazeerah complaining about India's exclusionary protest to France regarding France's new law banning religious head-gear in schools and colleges. According to the author, India's protest is limited to allowing Sikhs wear their turbans and ignores the Muslim community's issues with the same law. Can India represent all the Muslims in France? No. Can it represent all the Sikhs there? Yes. Case closed.
Secular India's intervention with France is not religion based, but represents the interests of its citizens, be that Sikh, Muslims or Hindus. Indian Muslims are overwhelmingly concerned about French restrictions on Islamic Hijab and would have liked their government to take up their concern with friendly countries. Both Dixit and your website (chhaya.org) editors are demonstrably prejudiced against Indian Muslims. Case is still pending and will remain so, till Indian Muslims get equal citizenship rights from their government in the full meaning of the term. Ghulam Muhammed, Mumbai, INDIA
