Dear Editor,
I saw this article (Pacific Solution’ Helps Turn the Refugee Tide) in Aljazeerah News/Info (6 March 2004) and wanted to let you know that many Australians oppose our Government's policy of mandatory detention of asylum seekers and work very hard for us to have a more humane and compassionate refugee policy. The way we tear asylum seekers, using them as deterrents againsy other asylum seekers, makes me ashamed of my country.

Arab-Americans: One Babystep at a time
I wanted to submit this very modest effort by a Jordanian-American couple in Oklahoma. I believe the little steps will collectively and over time make a difference.
Jordanian-Americans brought their love, dedication, and loyalty to Jordan with them to the USA. Even the small efforts and small triumphs of ordinary Jordanians in the USA are worth noting and recognizing.
Here is what a Middle School in Oklahoma, USA had to say about the efforts of Jordanian parents:
“Our team had the privilege of being a part of a wonderful presentation on the country of Jordan this past Tues., March 2nd, in the Media Center. Mr. and Mrs. Al-Nawasreh, parents of Mike Al-Nawasreh (a student in our team) showed a beautiful video/power point, discussed Jordan’s customs, gave us a wealth of information, and displayed a ton of authentic items from Jordan.
Students took a cultural tour following the presentation. They were able to try on the traditional attire, touch and view soaps, books, artwork, dishes, etc. They each were able to smell and grind popular herbs and spices used in cooking. The Explorers, teachers, and the entire school faculty enjoyed an additional treat: Mr. and Mrs. Al-Nawasreh prepared a delicious meal of chicken and rice for lunch.
Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Al-Nawasreh for their time, professionalism, and thoughtfulness. The presentation was outstanding.”
