Human price of maintaining the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories
According to the Palestinian News Agency (wafa), the number of Palestinians who have been killed by the Israeli occupation forces since the beginning of the Palestinian Uprising (Al-Intifadha), on September 29, 2000, was 1,448, at the end of April 2002. However, when the estimated figures of Palestinians killed in the massacres of Nablus and Jenin, during April 2002, the total figure becomes 2,187 killed and 19,193 injured.** Thousands of Palestinians have been arrested, hundreds of Palestinian houses were demolished and unknown number of trees were uprooted by the Israeli occupation soldiers. Also about 504 Israelis were killed and about 1,950 were injured.
The following is an attempt by Al-Jazeerah Information Center to document the number of victims of the Israeli military occupation starting from the second half of February 2002 (Note: There may be some differences between the total figures provided by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, above, and the figures provided by the Arabic media, below).
* The table includes the best estimates from the Wafa and the media. There are no official Palestinian figures available.
** As a result of the destruction of the Palestinian Authority infrastructure by the Israeli continuous war on the Palestinian people, it is almost impossible to quantify the number of injured Palestinians. There is no central authority that can receive information about that. Deaths are easier to report by the media because they are smaller in number.
-- No data available, particularly Palestinians wounded by Israeli occupation forces, on daily basis.
+ Al-Daraj massacre, Gaza City: 18 killed as of 7/24/02, many of the injured are in critical conditions.
Notes: More than ten thousand Palestinians have been arrested since March 29, 2002. Nobody except Israel knows what happened to them, released, kept, tortured, or killed.
