Resistance to foreign occupation and International Law

Dear Editor,

June 30, 2003

Acts of opposition to foreign occupation are justified under international law, just as the Palestinians fighting against the illegal Israeli military occupation of Palestine.

The struggle against illegal occupation by the people of a country using "all necessary means at their disposal" has been supported by several United Nations resolutions that reflect the overwhelming consent of the international community.

Resolution 2908 (1972) for example, which included this language, was adopted by 99 votes for, to 5 against, and 23 abstentions.

Perhaps most clearly United Nations' Resolution 2625 (24 October 1970), reflecting principles of customary international law, clearly states that people fighting against an illegal occupation "are entitled to seek and receive support."
